KOCHI: The Indian Medical Association, Kochi chapter, reached a major milestone when a full-fledged office-cum-convention facility was commissioned here earlier this week. This is the biggest IMA house in India. The achievement is matched only by the sacrifices made by hundreds of members of the IMA’s local chapter, who contributed thousands of hours of voluntary service and money to realise a dream that began long ago. In 1966, a 70-member team of doctors decided that they should have a house of their own for the organisation. Thus was born the IMA House on Warriam Road, inaugurated in 1971. This building complex witnessed the rapid growth of the association for more than three decades. It was in its precincts that several of IMA’s laudable projects were conceived. Dr. V.P. Kuriyipe and Dr. S. Sachidanda Kamath have been hailed as the persons behind the efforts that went into building the new IMA House. From the 3,600 sq. ft. of space on Warriam Road to the 1.5 lakh sq. ft. location in Kaloor, the IMA’s dream has grown in proportion to the new requirements of the profession. Dr. Abraham K. Paul, president of IMA, recalls that the organisation has continued to re-affirm its social responsibilities. As the new IMA House with state-of-the-art convention centres and recreation facilities is commissioned, one recalls the initiatives the association has taken in health promotion for the common people.
