Corrections and clarifications

* The first paragraph of a report “Varun issue: U.P. moves Supreme Court” (May 13, 2009) said “The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday challenged in the Supreme Court the recommendation of the State Advisory Board of the Allahabad High Court to revoke the slapping of the National Security Act on the BJP’s Pilibhit candidate, Varun Gandhi, for his alleged hate speeches.” The unedited sentence was “The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the advisory board’s recommendation to the State to revoke the charges against Varun Gandhi under the National Security Act for his alleged hate speeches.”

The State Advisory Board is constituted by the State Government under Section 9 of the National Security Act, 1990, and is not part of the Allahabad High Court.

* “Fastfact” (“Elections 2009” page, May 13, 2009) said that Konathala Ramakrishna of the Congress won the Anakapalli Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh in the 1999 election by just nine votes over his TDP rival. In 1999, Ganta Srinivasa Rao (TDP) won the seat against his Congress rival Gurunada Rao by polling 3,92,984 votes against the Congress’ 3,34,520 votes.

* With reference to a PTI Washington report, “U.S. tightens H-1B visa norms” (“International” page, May 11, 2009), Bryan Dalton, Consular Section Chief, US Consulate General, Chennai, clarifies: U.S. companies receiving U.S. Federal funds under various economic recovery and stimulus legislation packages are not barred from hiring foreign workers. Rather, if they have received those funds, they must certify that hiring a foreign citizen will not displace or disadvantage any American citizen, and that they first sought Americans to fill the position.

* A Guardian article “Ordeal of an incarceration and its aftermath” (Op-Ed, May 6, 2009), by Gerry Conlon, said in the first paragraph that the Guildford and Woolwich pub bombings in England took place in 1975. The author bio note, at the end of the article, said that Conlon, one of the Guildford Four jailed for an IRA bombing in 1974, was freed in 1989, while the last paragraph of the article said that he had lost 35 years of his life due to the conviction. A reader said there were contradictions.

The Guardian clarifies: The bombings took place in 1974. Mr Conlon himself is confused and the editorial desk did not correct his copy although they did add the final (and correct) paragraph. As to the lost 35 years, we think Mr. Conlon is referring here to the impact his arrest, conviction and prison sentence has had on his adult life. He says he was 20 when arrested and is 55 now.

* The results column in a report “Button, Barrichello make it a Brawn 1-2 yet again” (“Sport”, May 11, 2009) was right in saying that Button has a 14-point lead (Overall standings: 1. Jenson Button 41pts, 2. Rubens Barrichello 27). The text had the figure as 16.

* A report “Mumbai snaps 3-match losing streak” (“Sport”, May 11, 2009) said that Tendulkar is without a half century in his nine innings so far. He did make a half century against Kolkata Knight Riders — which was the 17th match of the IPL, on April 27.
