BHUBANESWAR: Former director general of police B. B. Mohanti, who was suspended in connection with alleged shielding his rape-convict son Bithotra Mohanti, on Wednesday joined duty following revocation of his suspension by the State government. Mr. Mohanti, a 1972-batch IPS officer, was suspended in 2007 when a Rajastan court issued a non-bailable warrant against him for helping his son jump parole. Before that the IPS officer was accused of playing hide and seek when teams of Rajasthan police came to arrest him. His son, Bitihotra, was convicted of raping a German scholar in 2006. However, he had been absconding after jumping parole. Speaking to reporters on way to joining his duty, Mr. Mohanti said he had no idea of whereabouts of his son. “I don’t want to talk about my son who did not turn up when I was passing through horrible period of my life. I will erase those memory by devoting on my works during rest of my service period,” he said. When Mr. Mohanti was suspended, he was holding the post of director general of police of home guards and fire service. Since then the post was lying vacant. Official sources said the senior most IPS officer of the State was likely to be reinstated in the same post.
