Call to overhaul pension system

Staff Reporter

‘It has to be ‘reasonable and socially justifiable’

‘Pension liability should remain with the government’

‘Pension fund must not be diverted for speculative trading’

KOLLAM: Mayor N. Padmalochanan has called for a ‘reasonable and socially justifiable’ ceiling on pension in the country.

He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘Pension and the new economic policies’ organised in connection with the ninth State conference of the Central Government Pensioners’ Association (CGPA) here on Wednesday. Mr. Padmalochanan said some individuals were drawing massive pensions and that is not socially justifiable at a time when many were living without any social security cover.

He called for a total overhaul of the pension system. The pension liability should remain with the government, he said.

Maximum concession

The maximum concession should be given to workers in the production and farm sectors, the Mayor said. Delivering the keynote address, State Planning Board Member K.N. Harilal said pension reforms should not be made on the basis of ideas put forth by neo-liberalists. He said the Centre was trying to curtail many social welfare schemes.

‘Inhuman’

Privatisation of pension was not only a dangerous move but also inhuman. On no account should pension fund be diverted for speculative trading, Mr. Harilal added.

CPI(M) leader K. Varadharajan was the moderator. CGPA general secretary T.A. Sudhakaran welcomed the gathering.
