Sri Lankan troops plan major rescue operation

B. Muralidhar Reddy

FROM THE WAR ZONE: The Sri Lankan military is all set to launch a major operation to rescue the civilians held hostage by the LTTE inside the fast shrinking new safety zone (NSZ) along the narrow strip on the Mullaithivu coast.

Hectic activity was seen on Wednesday among the forces which have in the last 48 hours managed to push 800 metres deep inside the NSZ.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported the death of another of its staffer from shrapnel wound inside the Tiger-occupied territory and the European Union troika expressed serious concern over the humanitarian crisis.
