Paswan rules out support to NDA

Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday called up Lok Jan Shakti Party president Ram Vilas Paswan to enquire about his well-being after a minor fire broke out in his house here.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad also telephoned him to enquire about the incident. The fire occurred due to short circuiting in an air-conditioning duct.

Speaking to journalists about his party’s stance post-elections, Mr. Paswan indicated that it could support an alternative secular government if the UPA failed to get the numbers, but said any decision would be taken jointly by the fourth front comprising the LJP, the RJD and the Samajwadi Party.

“We will work out a joint strategy after May 14. We will sit together and discuss the possibilities.”

The LJP chief ruled out support to the National Democratic Alliance. “The fourth front will not allow any NDA-led government to come to power.”

Asked whether there was any tie-up between the third and fourth fronts, he said there was nothing now, but declined to comment on the future. Mr. Paswan, however, pointed out that there were “inner contradictions” in the Third Front. “The Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, the RJD and the Janata Dal (United), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Left and the Trinamool Congress cannot go together.”
