Woman journalist robbed

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A senior woman journalist of a news agency was allegedly waylaid, beaten up and robbed of a few thousand rupees in cash and a gold ring at knife-point by two young men on a motorcycle in Patparganj here on Wednesday.

Thirty-three-year-old Deepika Vij, news editor with the Press Trust of India (PTI), was on her way to office in an auto-rickshaw in the morning when the motorcyclists waylaid the vehicle near Mother Dairy and robbed her.

The robbers forced the auto-rickshaw driver to stop after trailing him for some distance. They abused the driver for “driving recklessly”. When the woman journalist tried to get out of the auto-rickshaw, one of the motorcyclists allegedly took out a knife and asked her to hand over her belongings. They even punched her in the face when she resisted their attempt to snatch her bag. The robbers allegedly made off with Rs.3,000 in cash and a gold chain.

A case of robbery has been registered at the Mandawali police station. “The robbers were riding a red Pulsar motorcycle. The victim and the auto-rickshaw driver failed to note down the registration number of the two-wheeler. Several suspects have been interrogated and a breakthrough is expected soon,” said a police officer.
