UPA, NDA locked in a close race

The National Election Study 2009 of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies is based on a post-poll survey carried out in 536 Lok Sabha constituencies among a random sample of the electorate. The provisional findings of the survey suggest there is no overriding national wave that cuts across different regions and States. As in 2004, the national verdict is likely to be the sum total of the electoral outcomes at the State level. The provisional findings show that the Congress and its allies have made significant gains in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Orissa, Kerala and West Bengal. The BJP and its allies have made gains in Bihar and Jharkhand, while retaining their support in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. Overall, the survey suggests a close contest between the United Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance. Today, in the first of a three-part series, we present the findings for 10 States. The second and third parts, which will be published over the next two days, will present the findings in other major States as well as provide a national picture.

Corrections and Clarifications

(* * In a report "UPA, NDA locked in a close race" (May 14, 2009), the opening paragraph in the accompanying box item "National Election Study 2009" was incorrect in saying the CSDS post-poll survey covers 29 States. There are only 28 States and seven Union Territories in India.

The introductory paragraph in the main report was also incorrect in saying it was a presentation of the findings for 10 States. In the list given, they were for nine States and the Union Territory of Delhi.)
