VIZIANAGARAM: Collector G. Ram Narayana Reddy has asked officials to create awareness among people on seasonal diseases. Speaking at a meeting on seasonal diseases and preventive measures to be taken at the DM&HO conference hall on Thursday, Mr. Reddy instructed officials to lay emphasis on chlorination of water sources and transportation of potable water through tankers where the situation was found alarming. He asked officials to enlighten tribals on the side effects of consuming stale food. Aasha workers must have to inform the nearest PHCs in the event of outbreak of epidemics in villages, he added. Stating that tribals, obviously for lack of protected water supply schemes, depend mostly on stagnant water ponds for use in the Agency, Parvathipuram ITDA Project Officer M. Rama Rao instructed officials to carry out repairs to defunct borewells. District Medical and Health Officer Ch. Mahesh said that there was no dearth of funds to tackle seasonal diseases. District Malaria Officer Raghavulu said that there was a need to prepare a profile on diseases and display it at all PHCs. He asked people not to store water for more than a week in tanks, as they would turn breeding ground for mosquitoes. ICDS Project Director A.E. Roberts, Additional DM&HO B. Kasi Naidu and others were present. Water worksZilla Parishad Chairperson B. Appala Naidu has said that Rs.40 lakhs will be spent on repairs to borewells and replacement of old pipelines to improve water supply position in the next fortnight. At an emergency meeting on water needs, the Chairperson felt that due to allocation of more grants for sanitation under 12th financial plan the situation on water turned critical. He said that mobile vans with two mechanics attached to each one of them would be deployed in villages to carry out repairs to borewells.
