1 cr. compensation awarded to patient who developed complications after surgery HYDERABAD: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), which was ordered by the Supreme Court to pay a compensation of Rs. 1 crore to a software engineer for medical negligence resulting in permanent disability, maintained silence on the verdict on Thursday. The Supreme Court has awarded the compensation to Prashant S. Dhanaka, an engineer with Infosys, after he suffered paralysis and other complications following a surgery at the NIMS in the year 1990. Suffering from fever, he had gone to the institute where a surgery to remove a tumour was performed, but post-surgery Prashant was left with paralysis of lower limbs of the body. On approaching the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, he was awarded a compensation of Rs. 15 lakh. Prashant then approached the Supreme Court seeking orders for Rs. 7.57 crore as compensation and was on Thursday awarded Rs. 1 crore. The NIMS officials maintained a studied silence on the orders and quipped that they were yet to get the details. With the Institute Director Prasada Rao on leave, the Medical Superintendent N. Satyanarayana said, “We have not received the order copy and our advocate is yet to provide us with details”.
