Rural programme in Kancheepuram soon

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Bhartiya Yuva Shakti Trust (BYST) plans to launch the Rural Tamil Nadu programme in Kancheepuram in June this year, Lakshmi V. Venkatesan, executive vice-president, BYST, said here on Thursday. “The rural programme has been functioning successfully in Haryana and Maharashtra. BYST’s Chennai programme has also been working well. Now we are expanding to Kancheepuram to benefit rural entrepreneurs directly,” she said.

The programme, which would initially cover around 25 entrepreneurs, would benefit the engineering auto components, pharmaceuticals, garments, small IT and ITES and biotech industries, among others, in Kancheepuram, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Irungattukottai and nearby areas, Ms. Venkatesan said. An initial outlay of Rs.2-crore in the form of loans was being planned and this would be funded partly by banks and probably by the BYST Growth Fund launched earlier this year, she added.

“We have been talking to panchayats, local leaders, colleges and industrial associations. We held a stakeholder meeting this year and a few organisations have expressed interest for sourcing mentors,” Ms. Venkatesan said.
