M. Karthik Nagercoil: Even as Kanyakumari was one of the highly literate districts in the State, the pass percentage in the Plus Two examination (higher secondary) has come down when compared to the last year. The pass percentage of boys in the district, including Nagercoil, Thuckalay and Kuzuthurai educational divisions, was 75.19 where as the pass percentage of girls was 86.35. The over all pass percentage last year was 84.24 and it has come down in to 81.5 percentage this year. Totally 9,454 boys and 12,617 girls appeared for the examination. Out of this, 7,108 boys and 10,895 girls successfully passed in the examination. Karthik of Gebran Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Nagercoil brought laurels to his school by securing 1168 marks out of 1200 and emerged first in the district. He scored 189 marks in Tamil, 187 in English, 197 in Physics, 199 in Chemistry, 196 in Biology and 200 in Mathematics. G.S.Saranya of S.R.K.B.V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Padarnilam in Kulasekaram got the second rank by scoring 1167 marks. She got 186 marks in Tamil, 189 in English, 196 in Physics, 198 in Chemistry, 198 in Biology and 200 in Maths. The third rank holders in the district was Asin Ersath of Christu Raja Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Madavan Pillai of Vivekananda Kendra Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Kanyakumari, secured third rank by getting 1166 marks out of 1200. Karthik, the district topper, said his ambition was to become an engineer.
