66 colleges granted fresh affiliation Only Academic Council members to be in LICs BANGALORE: Management and computer application seats in undergraduate courses are in great demand with hundreds of colleges seeking enhancement of existing intake in multiples for B. Com, B.B.M, and B.C.A. courses while several new colleges have sought fresh affiliation to offer these courses from Bangalore University. The BU Academic Council, which met here on Thursday chaired by Vice Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev, went by the recommendations of local inquiry committees (LICs) as far as renewal or grant of affiliation even though it put a tab on enhancement of intake. Several colleges had sought enhancement of management undergraduate seats by over 100 per cent. Two Syndicate members — A.P. Ranganath and G.H. Madaiah — submitted a memorandum to Dr. Prabhu Dev ahead of the Council meeting alleging that some LICs had recommended sanction of additional seats or courses even if they were not applied for by the colleges. Some LICs even entertained applications renewal/grant of affiliation after the Syndicate finalised constitution of LICs, they said. Taking note of these, Dr. Prabhu Dev and Registrar Sanjay Vir Singh issued a note for the council stating the lacunae in some of the reports of LICs. The maximum intake for various undergraduate courses be restricted to 60, 40 and 40 for B. Com, B.B.M, and B.C.A, respectively, they said. In all, there were 704 colleges seeking renewal/fresh affiliation. While fresh affiliation was recommended for 66 colleges and rejected for 25 colleges, renewal was recommended for 598 colleges and rejected for 13 colleges and permanent affiliation was recommended for 13 colleges while it was rejected for two. As if to counter some Syndicate members who head LICs, a proposal was moved in the Council recommending appointment of only Academic Council members as members of LICs. The Council approved the recommendation unanimously. Special officerThe Council accepted a proposal to authorise the special officer appointed in the examination branch to sign provisional degree certificates and marks cards. Dr. Prabhu Dev said the measure was aimed at speedy disposal of a large number of applications seeking these certificates and marks cards.
