Demolition of St. Ann’s old building begins

HYDERABAD: After waiting for more than a year for an alternative new building to be constructed, the GHMC’s Town Planning wing began to demolish the old building of the St. Ann’s High School on the S.D. Road in Secunderabad on Thursday.

Road widening

The existing 100 ft road is being widened to 150 ft as part of the Inner Ring Road development and also for the Metro Rail line corridor.

“We wanted to complete the demolition work before the school reopens for the next academic season so as not to inconvenience the students. We are also going to simultaneously take up building of parapet and lay the road,” explained Chief City Planner B. Purushotham Reddy.

Sixty classrooms – 30 on the ground floor and 30 on the first floor corresponding to a total of 2,388 sq.mts are being demolished.

The school will be losing anywhere between 20ft-40 ft in width and 625 ft in length for the proposed road widening work.

Compensation

The CCP expects the work to take up to a month. The municipal corporation has paid Rs. 1.19 crore to the school management towards structural compensation.

Town Planning officials are also getting ready to demolish four pending properties on the super busy Erragadda road next week and already an amount of Rs. 1.2 crore has been paid for structural and land compensation.

Land acquisition

Similarly, another pending demolition of properties on the Begumpet road near Shopper’s Stop is to be taken up once the land acquisition details are sewn up, added Mr. Reddy.
