High Court pulls up MCD for bad roads

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Pulling up the MCD for the bad condition of roads, the Delhi High Court on Friday directed it to improve their quality as per international standards before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the city.

Justice Kailash Gambhir passed the order while hearing a matter pertaining to use of substandard material in the construction of a concrete road in Karol Bagh zone of the local body.

“People experience difficulties in driving on some stretches of uneven, broken and bumpy roads in Delhi. It is a nightmare for the citizens to drive through these uneven roads, particularly when they get stranded in long traffic jams due to potholes in the middle of the roads and uneven stretches,” he observed.

The Court directed the MCD to prepare a time-bound schedule to ensure that these roads were constructed as per international standards and properly maintained and whenever any repair was required the same must be carried out within the fastest possible time.

The Court also suggested to the MCD to have an emergency mobile staff to carry out immediate repair to roads.

Counsel for the civic body submitted that steps had already been taken to upgrade or modify existing infrastructure for construction and maintenance of roads and to improve their quality.

The Court directed the civic body to file a comprehensive affidavit giving details of the survey of roads that it had carried out and plans it had chalked out to improve their condition.
