A woman casts ballot in Kuwait City on Saturday. DUBAI: Kuwaitis participated in elections on Saturday after the ruler, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, dissolved Parliament two-months ago following an unresolved clash between lawmakers and the government. Sixteen of the more than 200 candidates are women, who have so far failed to secure a seat in Parliament. Several lawmakers in the previous Parliament had demanded investigations into corruption allegations involving members of the royal family, leading to a stalemate. The standoff stalled efforts to diversify the economy. It also prevented the approval of a stimulus package to revive the economy hit by the global crisis. The Kuwaiti Parliament is known for its vibrancy, but the royal family still holds the Prime Minister as well as the Defence, Interior and Foreign Affairs portfolios.
