KOCHI: Money transfer major, Western Union, is all set to expand its presence in Kerala, said the newly appointed country director, Kiran Shetty. Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Shetty said Western Union was already present at 3,300 centres in the State and this would go up by another 900 centres during the current fiscal. He said that Western Union had presence in over 52,000 locations in the country and it was now possible to transfer money from any part of the globe to India within ten minutes. One fact to be noted was that more than 80 per cent of the Western Union’s presence was in the rural areas. Its tie-up with post offices had helped both the service provider and the beneficiary, he said. It had more than 6.6 million customers in India alone, he said. Mr. Shetty said the global economic slowdown had impacted only marginally the money transfer sector. The money transferred was much higher than the foreign direct investment to the country. ‘The Yes’ campaign launched globally had vastly improved the image of Western Union, which was into a proactive mode these days to double the turnover this fiscal, he added.
