‘People rejected deceptive politics of GA’

HYDERABAD: Basking in the glory of bringing back the Congress to power for the second successive time, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the deceptive politics played by the TDP-led Grand Alliance did not cut ice with the voters.

“Voters saw through the deceptive and opportunistic politics being played out by the TDP and its alliance partners. They preferred credibility over deception, thus giving a decisive verdict in favour of the Congress,” Dr. Reddy told reporters at a joint press conference here addressed with AP Congress Committee president D. Srinivas at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday.

Terming the outcome of the elections as a victory of ‘people’s alliance’ over the ‘mahakutami’, Dr. Reddy said the credible work done by his government in the last five years on the developmental and welfare front was acknowledged by voters. “We have given down-to-earth governance in the last five years and understood the needs of the people and worked accordingly to fulfil them,” he pointed out.

He said people rejected the Cash Transfer Scheme and free colour television scheme and proved that they could not be purchased easily.

‘DS defeat shocking’

Asked why the party did not win the 230 Assembly seats he had predicted, Dr. Reddy said local problems, caste and religious equations brought down the figure. He said the defeat of APCC chief in Nizamabad Urban segment was a shock to him. On Telangana, the Chief Minister said he had already made his stand clear on the floor of the Assembly.
