Amar Singh: we will wait for invitation

Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: Congratulating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the United Progressive Alliance’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Saturday said the party would await a formal invitation from Manmohan Singh or Sonia Gandhi before declaring its support to the UPA.

The party’s Central Parliamentary Board would meet here on Sunday to decide its strategy.

The SP is part of the Fourth Front along with Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Lok Janshakti Party. The Fourth Front is also meeting here on Sunday.

Welcoming the revival of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Amar Singh said the results could have been “different” had the pre-poll alliance between the SP and the Congress worked out.

“We could have wiped out the Bahujan Samaj Party. So far it has only been weakened.”

“Right decision”

Mr. Singh said the SP’s decision to come to the rescue of the UPA government on the nuclear deal on which the Left and the Bahujan Samaj Party tried to corner the Prime Minister had proved to be correct. He described the results as a “victory of secular forces.”
