Kin of leaders sail through

Former Minister S.S. Patil’s son was not lucky

Not all defectors could win

Candidates were chosen based on their potential to win: Yeddyurappa

BANGALORE: The Lok Sabha polls proved lucky for kin of leading politicians who had entered the fray for the first time as all of them won but for former Minister S. S. Patil’s son Shivakumar Patil, who contested on the Janata Dal (S) ticket.

The BJP found itself in the thick of a controversy after it decided to field B.Y. Raghavendra (Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son), J. Shanta and Sanna Pakeerappa (sister and cousin of Health Minister B. Sriramulu respectively), Shivakumar Udasi (Minister C.M. Udasi’s son) and Ramesh Katti (Minister Umesh Katti’s brother) in the polls. But all these first-timers managed to win. Referring to this, Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday maintained that the party had chosen these candidates based on their potential to win and not because of their kinship with leaders.

However, it was a mixed bag for defectors. The run-up to the Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka had seen unprecedented party-hopping. The BJP was the biggest beneficiary of such floor-crossing as it attracted a large number of leaders from the Opposition.

But not all defectors who got ticket to contest the polls emerged victorious. The prominent losers among defectors in the BJP were Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, C.P. Yogeshwar, L.R. Shivarame Gowda (who came from the Congress) and A.R. Krishnamurthy (who was from JD-S).

At the same time, some defectors such as D.B. Chandre Gowda, G.S. Basavaraj (from Congress) and Mr. Ramesh Katti (from JD-S) who contested on the BJP ticket registered victories.
