Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Building Designers Organisation (KBDO) has called on the State government to make parking facilities mandatory for all buildings, except houses, when the amendment to the building rules comes into force. A press release issued here, quoting KBDO president Kowdiar Harikumar and general secretary Mahesh K. Pillai, said provision for parking in the existing building rules was observed more in the breach by commercial buildings, government offices, residential apartments, hospitals, schools and wedding halls. Diverting parking spaceThe press note said many building owners were diverting the parking space for other uses after tax assessment by the Corporation. The public are forced to bear the consequences. Traffic problems result when parking space is used for other purposes. The organisation appealed to the government to cancel the licence of such institutions. Valet parkingIn a memorandum submitted to the Chief Town Planner, KBDO proposed temporary sanction for valet parking until other facilities are made available. It suggested that 50 per cent of the front setback be reserved for parking. Stringent lawsThe memorandum urged the CTP to exempt four-storied residential buildings from Fire NOC and permit service floor for all buildings. The organisation also stressed the need for stringent laws against unauthorised constructions.
