What they say

S. Veeramani

S. Veeramani, Divisional Officer, Chennai City Central:

Many shops on Ritchie Street are in cramped areas and even a small act of carelessness, poor housekeeping or an improper electrical connection could cause a fire.

Most of the buildings are old and do not have a fire escape either.

From our experience we know that we should expect fires either during lunch hour or around midnight.

It is during these times that accidental short circuits often occur. A shopkeeper may have forgotten to switch off the power supply or might have overloaded the electrical sockets. We are trying to create awareness in the area.
