HYDERABAD: Finance Minister K. Rosaiah praised former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao for initiating the liberalisation and reform process in 1994 which resulted in ending government monopoly and permit system and regulations. The process led to entry of the private sector and competition, eventually setting the stage for phenomenal growth of the telecom sector. Gigantic leapsThis sector made gigantic leaps in the last 15 years, thanks to the liberalisation, he said while inaugurating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day organised by the Federation of AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here on Sunday. Phenomenal growthMr. Rosaiah pointed out that the telecom sector witnessed a phenomenal growth starting from about 80,000 telephones in the 50s to five million in 1994 and 420 million now. S. D. Saxena, former director of BSNL in his ‘Dr.T.H. Chowdary Endowment Lecture’ explained the efforts being made to transform a government department into a public sector undertaking. He praised Dr. Chowdary for revolutionising the telecom sector. These changes helped the administration meet the post-tsunami situation efficiently. Earlier, Suraj Prasad Agarwal, FAPCCI president, welcomed the gathering. Representatives of the Centre for Telecommunication Management Studies, Institution of Electronics and Telecom Engineers, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and Computer Society of India, which jointly organised the World Telecom Day celebrations, were present.
