BJP candidate loses deposit

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Among other certainties that the results of election to the Erode Parliamentary constituency have displayed is that the Bharatiya Janata Party has a bare minimum presence.

The party’s candidate, N.P. Palanisamy, secured only 8,429 of the 7,67,023 votes polled, which is 1.2 per cent.

In the process, like independent candidates he has lost his deposit.

He secured the maximum votes in Dharapuram Assembly segment: 2,219, which is 2.5 per cent of the votes polled.

Lowest from Kangayam

His lowest was from Kangayam segment, from which he got only a mere 773 votes.

In Komarapalayam too he polled fewer than 1,000 votes. In the other four segments, he averaged about 1,300.

With his 8,429, Mr. Palanisamy managed to secure only the fifth position, behind Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam, which emerged third, and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, which bagged the fourth position.

The party’s poor performance can be attributed to a few factors like absence of allies with mass support base and campaign by well-known party leaders.

The candidate was left to fend for himself, which the result shows.

If the party hopes to make its presence felt, it still has a very, very long way to go.
