Task ahead

People should heave a sigh of relief over the end of an inglorious chapter in the history of Sri Lanka. Prabakaran achieved practically nothing in his three-decade fight with Colombo. He only perpetrated terrorism, killed innocent people and remained a permanent threat to world peace. Mr. Rajapaksa must be congratulated on having accomplished his mission of eliminating the LTTE. He has a huge task before him - the rehabilitation of the Tamil civilians.

S. Ramakrishnasayee,

Ranipet

The subcontinent and the Tamils of Sri Lanka, battered by both the military and the LTTE, may heave a sigh of relief at Prabakaran's end and the LTTE's defeat. But the ethnic strife is far from over. The Sri Lankan government should move forward in the right direction. Let us hope that the end of the bloody war will usher in peace.

N. Divakar,

Now that the LTTE has been destroyed, India should persuade Sri Lanka to rehabilitate the displaced Tamil civilians in the war zone to bring lasting peace.

Prabakaran's death has ended a bitter episode in Sri Lanka's history. President Rajapaksa should address the key concerns of the Tamil population without delay. He should allow humanitarian assistance to reach the displaced Tamil civilians. The international media should be allowed access to the situation in the island nation.

The Rajapaksa government should ensure that the Tamils do not suffer any more. It must strive towards finding a political solution to the ethnic issue. Only then will peace and harmony prevail in the country.

The three-decade old terrorism in Sri Lanka has come to an end. Hats off to Mr. Rajapaksa, whose determination to eliminate terrorism from the Sri Lankan soil bore fruit! The government should now filter the remaining LTTE cadres, who may indulge in revenge killings. History bears testimony to the fact that a terror group cannot become peace-loving.

The governments of Sri Lanka and India should address the issue of the Sri Lankan Tamils seriously. Rebuilding the areas destroyed by the civil war should be the topmost priority. Mr. Rajapaksa deserves to be complimented on his determined effort to destroy the LTTE.

M. Sudha,

Chennai

With the elimination of the LTTE and its leaders, the brutal and ruthless civil war which has claimed thousands of lives in the past 26 years has come to an end. The terrorist movement in northern Sri Lanka might have been eliminated but the political movement will continue till the government comes up with a genuine agreement. Mr. Rajapaksa should translate his words into deeds and provide humanitarian assistance to the war-ravaged people. India should actively engage itself in the peace process and strive for an enduring peace is the island nation.

Amaresan Pattusamy,

Tiruvannamalai
