dated May 19, 1959: Racial tension

Uniformed police in pairs, patrolled Notting Hill, London’s racial trouble spot on May 18, as detectives hunted a gang of White youths who stabbed a West Indian to death yesterday. It was the first race murder to come to the district which last autumn was swept by fierce riots. Plain clothed Scotland Yard men knocked on paint blistered doors and questioned scores of householders. But the Notting Hill folk were unable to produce any clues pointing to the killers of 32-year-old Kelso Benjamin Cochrane, a six-foot carpenter from Antigua who had been in Britain about five years.
