TDLP may meet on May 21

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Legislature Party may meet on May 21 or 22 and elect N. Chandrababu Naidu as their leader. This will be Mr. Naidu’s second consecutive term as Leader of the Opposition that could be a record.

Sources say three senior legislators -- P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, K. E. Krishnamurthy and Nagam Janardhan Reddy, representing Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana regions respectively, may be chosen as deputy leaders.

Errabelli Dayakar Rao is tipped to become secretary of the TDLP for a second time while either Ravula Chandrasekhara Reddy or Payyavula Keshav may take the post of the whip.

Both had held the post earlier.

With no enthusiasm left in the party after the drubbing it received, the party’s annual Mahanadu coinciding with the party founder, N. T. Rama Rao’s birth anniversary, would be a low key one-day affair this time on May 28. Anticipating that it would return to power, the party had earlier drawn huge plans for the Mahanadu to be held here. Now all these plans have dropped and the annual conference would be simple.

Two days after the results, party leaders still seemed to be in a daze unable to recover from the shocking defeat. The party office, which was a beehive of activity till the day of results, continues to look deserted. On Monday, barring the office secretary, T. D. Janardhan Rao, none of the senior leaders were present. Like Mr. Naidu, they all have all gone into an introspection mode.
