M.L.Melly Maitreyi

HYDERABAD: A majority of the Lok Sabha winners registered thumping victories with comfortable margins and contestants in 11 out of 42 constituencies handed out defeat to their nearest rivals by more than a lakh votes.

Among the 11 candidates who topped the list with one lakh plus votes, eight belonged to Congress. The highest victory margin of 1,92,444 votes in the 15th Lok Sabha elections in the State was registered by Araku MP V. Kishore Chandra Deo, tipped to be the Lok Sabha Speaker, over Midiam Babu Rao of CPI(M). But, could not better G. Venkataswamy’s record of 2.63 lakh from Peddapalli in the last elections.

He was followed by Congress candidate Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy who defeated TDP’s Palem srikanth Reddy by a of 1,78,846 votes. Anjan Kumar Yadav of the Congress retained Secunderabad by defeating BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya for a second consecutive time by 1,70,167 votes.

Interestingly, Gutha Sukhender Reddy, who quit Telugu Desam just before elections and contested on Congress ticket from Nalgonda, trounced his CPI deputy general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy by a margin of 1,52,982 votes.

Komitireddy Raggopal Reddy of Congress defeated his CPI (M) opponent Nomula Narsimaiah, hoping for a Parliament debut from Bhongir, a Left stronghold, by a margin of 1,39,888 votes. Congress candidates Rajaiah Sircilla from Warangal, Kanumuri Bapiraju from Narsapuram and A. Sai Pratap from Rajampet were other ‘lakhpathi’ winners.

Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM secured an impressive margin of 1,13,865 votes against Zahid Ali Khan who contested on TDP symbol. The latter was expected to give a tough fight to the formidable sitting MP for the first time in the history of old city.

But, then some prominent leaders had to eat a humble pie. Renuka Choudhary who was looking to perform a hat-trick from Khammam was defeated by TDP’s Nama Nageswara Rao by 1,24,448 votes.

Narrow margins

Prominent film actor and TRS secretary general Vijayashanthi won by a narrow 6,077 vote margin. Even her party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao managed a majority of only 20,184 in Mahbubnagar over his Congress rival D.Vittal Rao.

M.Venugopal Reddy of TDP scraped through with the lowest margin of 1,607 votes against V. Balashowri of Congress from Narasaraopet. U. Arun kumar, Congress MP from Rajahmundry, was in the same league as he won by a margin of 2,147 votes over film actor Murali Mohan of TDP.

Interestingly in Kurnool, while Kotla Jaya Surya Prakash Reddy, sitting MP romped home with a margin of 74,000, his nearest rival was G. Ramakrishna of BSP who polled over three lakh votes.

Out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats, Praja Rajyam candidates were in the second place in only three -- Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Amalapuram, all of which went to the Congress.
