KOTTAYAM: Governor R.S. Gavai has cautioned against the declining standards of academic performance which according to him pose a severe threat to the pursuit of excellence in educational institutions.

Delivering the special convocation address at the MG University, Kottayam, to honour Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, veteran ayurvedic physician P.K. Warrier and noted musician K.J. Yesudas, Mr. Gavai said such guiding-lights were more relevant today than ever before especially in the present day context.

According to him, the three eminent personalities represent the highest levels in their chosen pursuits namely, jurisprudence, music and medical science.

So vast is the reach and range of their versatile personality, that they have enshrined themselves in the people’s minds, he said.

According to him, Justice Balakrishnan was motivated by a deep sense of social responsibility and his judgments on various crucial issues had won him wide acclaim.

The Governor dubbed Mr. Yesudas as a musical genius of the highest order and pointed out that he was at ease with both classical and light music.

Mr. Gavai said Kerala had always provided a favourable home ground for ayurveda to take roots. Dr. Warrier, according to him, is a golden link in the glorious chain of eminent ayurvedic physicians, he said.

Vice-Chancellor Rajan Gurukal presented the memento. Justice Balakrishnan, Mr. Yesudas and Dr. Warrier replied in their acceptance speeches.

University Registrar R.S. Unni, Pro Vice-Chancellor Rajan Varghese and others spoke on the occasion.
