Letter of support sent to President Chamling to be sworn in today KOLKATA: The Sikkim Democratic Front, which is set to form government for a record fourth term in the Himalayan State, has extended its “unconditional support” to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, its president Pawan Chamling told The Hindu over telephone from Gangtok on Tuesday. “The letter renewing our unconditional support to the UPA was sent to the President on Tuesday,” said Mr. Chamling, who submitted the resignation of his Council of Ministers to Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh. He and his Ministers will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Governor at the Raj Bhavan in Gangtok on Wednesday morning. On his expectations from the new government at the Centre, Mr. Chamling said, “All my State wants is justice.” He expressed the hope that the newly elected UPA government, to be headed by Manmohan Singh, would “take care of Sikkim’s interests and provide it with the assistance to carry out development.” “Though Sikkim has a lone representative in the Lok Sabha its needs are special. It is a sensitive-border State. The SDF governments had been working towards ensuring peace and keeping the State free of insurgent activities for the interests of our nation,” Mr. Chamling said. Mr. Chamling was invited by the Governor to form the next government in Sikkim on the basis of his party’s performance in the Assembly elections after the former staked his claim to do so. The SDF swept the polls held on April 30, winning all the 32 seats up for grabs.
