BANGALORE: The issue of relocating the Bangalore Turf Club from its present premises is being discussed for the last four decades.
The BTC that was established in 1921 got control of the 84-acre land in the city’s centre in 1923 through a lease agreement with the Maharaja of Mysore.
Subsequently, as vehicular traffic increased in the area, so did demands to relocate the race course to the outskirts.
The first proposal to move the BTC from the present location was made in the 1960s and the Government offered 240 acres in Jakkur during 1970, but the BTC did not evince much interest. Moves to relocate it to ease traffic in the vicinity were also initiated by the late Ramakrishna Hegde and S.M. Krishna during their tenure as Chief Ministers.
