BHUBANESWAR: Showcasing different Indian classical, semi-classical folk and contemporary dance styles, the Tridhara annual national dance festival - 2009 will be under way at Rabindra Mandap in the city from June 27 to 29. Being hosted by the city-based Tridhara Odissi dance institute of Guru Gajendra Panda, the festival will also have the Tridhara annual award ceremony for performing arts. Guru Gajendra told this newspaper that Tridhara (dance institution), meaning three streams, was founded by late Odissi Guru Debaprasad Das, one of the founder fathers of the Indian classical dance style of Odissi, who believed that the style had its roots in tribal, folk and classical arts and it was not entirely a style that evolved as a temple dance form. “As a globe-trotter dance guru who took Odissi on the first-ever world tour through her celebrated disciple late Indrani Rehman, he was quite keen in making people of his home State aware of the rich legacy of Indian art traditions. Tridhara annual dance festival will strive to work in that direction,” he added and explained that earlier it was an all-Odissi festival but from this year its scope has been expanded to encompass all dance styles of the world. The three-day festival would feature solo, duet and group performances by dancers of different dance styles like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Sattriya, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Chhau and Sambalpuri, said the festival director. A few artistes from abroad are performing in the festival this year. “I am also keen on showcasing the five prominent and distinct dance styles of Odissi evolved by the great gurus Pankaj Charan Das, Mayadhar Raut, Debaprasad Das, Kelucharan Mohapatra and Surendra Nath Jena in the festival every year,” said Guru Gajendra. Annual awardThe Tridhara annual award would be presented to a pioneer of performing arts this year, he said. In October, Tridhara would host the 2nd international Deba-Dhara Odissi dance festival in the capital that will showcase dancers and choreographic compositions of late Guru Debaprasad Das, said Guru Gajendra who is a senior disciple of Debaprasad. “The thrust of the festival has been to highlight the distinct features of the style as evolved by its founder,” he said and added that acommemorative volume on Debaprasad Das dance style would be brought out while a symposium and a photo exhibition onthe guru and his life and works would also hosted.
