B.C. Khanduri NEW DELHI: It is almost certain that Uttarakhand Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri will be replaced soon, and a decision may well be taken here on Thursday at a meeting between Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh and senior leader L. K. Advani. The BJP central leadership is also veering round to the view that this time, when the present Chief Minister is replaced, the party should allow the MLAs of the State to express their views on who should lead the government. “When Maj.Gen. Khanduri was elected leader of the Uttarakhand legislature party, he had the support of only two of the BJP’s 33 MLAs in the Assembly,” a senior party leader pointed out, adding, “This time the central leadership is not inclined to impose its view on the legislature party.” One plan is to send central observers to Dehra Dun to ascertain from the MLAs what their view is. After this a final decision would be taken here and then the formality of electing a new leader will be completed by the State legislature party. Party sources indicated that at the expected Rajnath Singh-Advani meeting on Thursday, Maj.Gen. Khanduri’s fate may well be sealed. “We cannot keep the issue hanging. A decision will be taken soon,” it was stated. The front-runner for the top job in the State is former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, now a Rajya Sabha member, who is believed to command an overwhelming support in the BJP legislature party. It seems the inaccessibility of the current Chief Minister and his “military style of functioning” have led to disenchantment within the party and among the people. Another source of worry for the party is that the BJP is just short of a majority in the State Assembly with an effective strength of 68.
