BJP wins TP posts

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: K. Ramachandra Kumpala (65) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shriyala G. Hegde of the Janata Dal (Secular) were elected president and vice-president respectively of the Mangalore Taluk Panchayat here on Wednesday.

Prior to this election, Vajrakshi P. Shetty of the BJP and Ramesh Poojary of the Janata Dal (S) were president and vice-president respectively. Mr. Kumpala, from the Someshwara-1 ward, defeated his Congress rival T.A. Abdul Khader of Thokur-62 ward by one vote. Ms. Hegde, of Padumornadu ward, won against her Congress contestant Sujatha of Belkunje ward also by one vote. The winners got 18 votes each in the 36-member house. One member abstained from voting.

The number of votes in the Mangalore Taluk Panchayat has been reduced from 37 to 36 with the resignation of Sumana Nayak of the Hosabettu ward. Hence a tie was possible in the election, as technically, the rivals could get 18 votes each. The decision of Dayawathi of the CPI(M) came as a relief to the winners.
