Big boost: The proposed lifts on the foot overbridge on Nungambakkam High Road will benefit pedestrians and motorists. — CHENNAI: Work on providing a lift each on either side of the foot overbridge on Nungambakkam High Road is in full swing and they will be ready for use in a month’s time. Civil works on the foot overbridge are nearing completion. The Chennai Corporation proposed to install the facility in its budget this year. An official of the civic body said that the lift had been proposed as pedestrians found it very difficult to cross the road, which was one-way. “There is a continuous flow of traffic at the spot and with pedestrians darting across it proves dangerous to their lives and also cause problems for motorists too.” To cost Rs. 65 lakh‘Machineless lifts’ that will not have machine rooms will be installed on either side. The project is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs.65 lakh. The lifts will each have a capacity of 12 passengers and take 30 seconds to travel up or come down. The lift cars will be transparent on one side so that those going up or down can have a view of the road below. Operators will man the lifts. The civic body has not fixed any charges for the usage of the lifts. The construction work commenced a few months ago. Utilities, including stormwater drains and telecom and electricity cables, had to be shifted for the work to be taken up. K. Balasubramanian, secretary, Avenue Road Civic Exnora, said the lift would be a very useful facility for all, especially elders and those who are sick. There are several commercial establishments on either side, including banks. Many pedestrians find if extremely difficult to cross the road at that point with speeding vehicles. Our club had submitted a petition to the Chennai Corporation for such a facility,” he added.
