Congress bags majority of new constituencies

M.L. Melly Maitreyi

HYDERABAD: The Congress emerged victorious in all the seven new Parliamentary seats which were carved out after the constituencies were reorganised on the basis of population and geographical contiguity as part of the delimitation exercise. The party also bagged a majority of the 62 new Assembly constituencies created.

The seven newly constituted Lok Sabha constituencies from where the Congress candidates had won were Zaheerabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella, Bhongir, Mahbubabad, Araku (ST) and Vizianagaram.

The delimitation exercise did not result in any surprises for the candidates/ political parties as they retained the new seats that largely corresponded to the earlier constituencies.

For instance, Zaheerabad Parliamentary constituency was formed with three Assembly segments taken from Medak Lok Sabha seat and four from Nizamabad district. While Congress candidate Suresh Kumar Shetkar won from Zaheerabad, TRS retained Medak with Vijayashanthi winning it.

Sarvey Satyanarayana of the Congress was elected from the newly carved out Malkajgiri Lok Sabha in Ranga Reddy district. He moved to the new constituency as Siddipet (SC) which he represented in the last elections no longer existed after delimitation. So was the case with S. Jaipal Reddy who was elected from the newly carved out Chevella in Ranga Reddy as Miryalaguda which he represented earlier vanished from the electoral map.

Assembly seats

Even in the 62 newly reorganised Assembly constituencies, Congress won from 33, while TDP won 13, PRP-5, TRS-3, two each to MIM, CPI and one each to LSP and BJP. Even here, the delimitation exercise did not greatly mar the prospects of political parties. For instance, Jubilee Hills, Serilingampally, Kukatpalli were carved out of the earlier Khairatabad constituency held by Congress in the last elections.

This time too, Congress candidates won from Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills and Serilingampally while Lok Satta bagged Kukatpally.Kishan Reddy of BJP who contested from Amberpet after his Himayatnagar disappeared in the reorganisation, won from the new seat.
