No let-up in heat wave

New Delhi: Incessant rains, accompanied by high-velocity winds, claimed 20 lives in Uttar Pradesh but cooled large parts of the State even as heat wave continued to scorch the Northern belt with Hisar in Haryana sizzling at 45.9 degree Celsius.

Twenty people perished since Wednesday evening in Uttar Pradesh in heavy downpours and squalls which flattened mud houses and uprooted trees in several places disrupting normal life.

The rains dipped the mercury by up to three degree Celsius at many places providing respite to residents from the searing heat. However, Jhansi in the State reeled at a high of 43.8 degrees. -- PTI
