Commuters hit as MTC suspends night services

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has suspended its night services in most parts of the southern suburbs of Chennai for the past two days, leaving many commuters stranded in different places.

Following violence

When contacted, crew and officials of the MTC at Tambaram said the services were suspended since Tuesday night following incidents across the State, in which buses were stoned, in the wake of reports of the death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam chief V.Prabakaran.

“Restoration soon”

The MTC officials said they had suspended only the skeletal night services, anticipating violence. They were hopeful of restoring them in a day or two.

The suspension of night services had a telling effect on commuters waiting for buses to reach their homes in some of the far-flung areas around Tambaram.
