Corporation conducted raids in all 10 zones and seized 100 kg
of calcium carbide stones

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Thursday seized around 300 kg of mangoes that were artificially ripened using calcium carbide. The fruits were destroyed.

The civic body’s Health Department conducted raids in all 10 zones and also seized 100 kg of calcium carbide stones.

Teams of officials conducted the raids and searched wholesalers, retail sellers and storage facilities. Fruits were seized from Koyambedu, Pulianthope, Perambur, Parry’s Corner and Ice House.

Appeal

The Corporation has urged shop owners not to use chemicals to ripen fruits as it causes health problems. It has also asked residents not to consume such fruits, a release stated.

Mayor M.Subramanian on Thursday administrated the Anti-Terrorism Day pledge to officials and elected representatives of the Chennai Corporation.

Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, Deputy Mayor R. Sathyabama, Deputy Commissioners M.Balaji, Jothi Nirmala, and M.Vallalar were among those who took the pledge administered on the occasion of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
