MADURAI: With the model code of conduct imposed in view of the Lok Sabha elections lifted with effect from May 19, major development works in the city and district, which remained suspended, are being given a fillip by officials. District Collector P. Seetharaman has directed the officials to speed up the rail-over-bridge construction work under way at Sellur at a meeting held a few days back. Similarly, work on the proposed IT parks at Vadapalanji and Ilanthaikulam near Ring Road for which foundation stones were laid by the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, about a year back would get revived from next week, a senior official said. Apart from these ongoing projects, the Collector discussed modalities on land acquisition for the Madurai airport expansion project, officials said. Last week, a fatal road accident on the Ring Road claimed 18 lives. The Superintendent of Police and other officers from Transport Department had stressed the need for installing caution boards at curves and narrow stretches. The deficiencies of the 27-km-long Ring Road were discussed at the road safety meeting held on Friday at the Collectorate, a senior official said. Similarly, Mr. Seetharaman had directed the district supply officials to carry out door-to-door verification of applicants for issue of new ration cards. All the BDOs and taluk-level officers had been directed to take up the pending assignments in their respective jurisdiction. Be it development project or welfare programme, they should speed up the implementation, the officials were told. From coming Monday, the grievance redressal day meetings would be held as usual and the agricultural grievances day too would also commence, an official at the Collectorate said.
