DMK cancels executive meeting
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cancelled a meeting of its executive committee scheduled for Friday. There was no formal word on the reason for the cancellation.
Senior DMK leader and former Union Minister, T.R. Baalu, had said in New Delhi on Thursday that the meeting in Chennai would decide on the party’s course of action.
Reaching here on Friday morning from Delhi, Mr. Baalu told journalists at the airport: “We’re not worried. Congress is our friend. Mr. [A.] Raja [former Union Minister] and other MPs will participate in the swearing-in ceremony.”
In the afternoon, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi arrived by a scheduled flight from Delhi.
Most DMK Members of Parliament and several senior party functionaries came with him.
Mr. Raja stayed back in New Delhi to be the DMK’s representative at the swearing-in. Ministers and a large number of party cadres assembled at the airport to receive Mr. Karunanidhi.
