Court pulls up MCD officials

Staff Reporter

For not making documents available to Delhi police

“Not cooperating” in probe into irregularities in sweepers’ recruitment in Sanitary Department

Court summons MCD Director (Vigilance), DC of Shahdara (South) Zone

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday summoned the Director (Vigilance) of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Deputy Commissioner of Shahdara (South) Zone to explain why the civic body had not made available to the Delhi police documents relating to alleged irregularities in recruitment of sweepers in the Sanitary Department.

The Court directed the two senior municipal officials to be present in person before the Court this coming Monday.

The Court passed the order on an application by the Economic Offences Wing (EoW) of the Delhi police informing the Court that the Vigilance Branch was not handing over to them relevant documents for further investigation of the allegations. The Court had some time ago directed the police to investigate the allegations on a petition by an association of sweepers working in the Sanitary Department of the local body.

The association alleged that the Trilokpuri councillor had recruited 21 sweepers in the Sanitary Department in connivance with certain officials in violation of the rules.

Commenting on the conduct of the civic body in the case, the Court said: “It is quite a shocking state of affairs that for more than six months the department concerned has not been able to supply the requisite documents to enable the EoW to proceed with the inquiry.”

“The conduct of the civic body clearly shows that some of its officials are also in league with the councillor, and to scuttle the inquiry no assistance is being provided by these officials,” the Court said.
