HYDERABAD: After sitting tight and waiting for the monsoon to break in the Andamans, the GHMC has at last announced its intention to take up desilting of the main storm water drains here on Friday. Special Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu inspected some of the drains and said that desilting will be taken up on a war-footing to an extent of 564 kilometres divided it into 133 works altogether at a cost of Rs. 7.5 crore. Works have already started in some places with men and machinery, he said. Mr. Krishna Babu said that all the deputy commissioners and executive engineers have been directed to monitor the works personally in their respective jurisdictions. Any laxity would be viewed seriously, he warned. The officials concerned were free to deploy more men and machinery wherever necessary as all the works are to be completed by June 10. Usually, the municipal corporation should have been in midst of the desilting exercise as these are done during summer to brace up for the monsoon. But, this year officials claim that the general elections exercise in the last couple of months has delayed calling for tenders for the work. Citizens can send their suggestions or complaints to : 155304.
