KOCHI: A man and his daughter drowned in the backwaters at Kundanoor here on Friday evening, after the country boat they were travelling in capsized. Five others, including four children, on the boat escaped unhurt. The dead were identified as Sujay, 39, and his daughter Aswathy, 12, residents of Kadavanthra. The accident occurred in the Kundanoor-Chilavanur backwater stretch at around 4.30 p.m. A fire and rescue unit from Kadavanthra rushed to the spot and launched a search with the help of the Panangad police. Both the bodies were recovered by around 7 p.m. According to police, the victims were returning from the house of Sudhi, a friend of the deceased Sujay, at Chilavanur. Sudhi, who was rowing the country boat, rescued the remaining children. Reportedly, the boat swayed violently after the children aboard it kept on moving, the police said. This ,along with strong wave, resulted in the boat capsizing, said Devarajan, opposition leader of Maradu Panchayat and member of the ward, where the accident took place.
