Dealing with burglary menace Law and Order

“Habitual offenders with expertise in breaking into locked houses seem to be operating in the city,” writes S Vijay Kumar

It does not matter whether you keep your house locked for a few hours or days together. But for adequate safety measures, it is prone to burglary.

On many occasions, working couple who returned home at dusk found their house burgled. There have been instances of major thefts even when the residents of the house were sleeping. Groups of habitual offenders with expertise in breaking into locked houses seem to be operating in the city if the hundreds of property offences reported in recent months are any indication.

Going by official records, 172 property offences (burglaries and thefts) were reported in April alone resulting in a property loss to the tune of Rs.1.6 crore. However, police say 113 cases were detected and 84 per cent of the stolen property was recovered. A majority of the offences occurred in Chennai South Zone with T. Nagar and Adyar police districts taking the lead.

“Despite conducting awareness campaigns, many people still keep cash and gold jewellery at home while going out on a holiday or to attend functions. We have been insisting on basic preventive steps such as keeping valuables in bank lockers, alerting the nearest police station about long vacation and installation of burglar alarm,” Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan said.

According to him, it was the responsibility of the public to take preventive steps to safeguard their property.

Almost every bank had locker facility with nominal charges. “Installation of surveillance camera is now affordable. On our part, we have an efficient crime detection team.

Most of the major crimes reported this year were detected. Night patrolling and vehicle checks have been intensified in vulnerable areas,” Mr. Radhakrishnan adds.

Dos and don’ts

In the Anna Nagar police district, where the lowest rate of property offences has been reported, pamphlets were distributed in residential areas a couple of months ago alerting the public on the dos and don’ts with regard to safety aspects.

“We have sensitised the people who are living in flats to the need for using quality locks. In most of the burglary cases, it was found that poor quality locks were used, says Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anna Nagar) T.S. Anbu.

He also says that besides engaging a security guard, “we have also suggested that the residents’ welfare associations go in for closed circuit television (CCTV) network,”
