Jeweller attacked by robbers has 200 sutures

Robbers come in guise of customers to the shop

Police release TV visuals to get clues from public

HYDERABAD: It was presence of mind, which saved the life of jeweller Mukesh Agarwal who was attacked by two armed robbers at Kushaiguda on Thursday.

The lean jeweller would have been no match for the two assailants, one of them armed with a sickle and the other with a pistol. As the burly man wielding the sickle hit him repeatedly even as he was pinned down by the other, Agarwal instinctively covered his head with his hands. And that is what saved his life now, police said quoting the doctors treating him.

Most of the wounds were on his hands and arms. So many were the gashes inflicted on him that the doctors had to literally stitch it with 200 sutures. People were aghast to see TV visuals of the incident. The visuals were released by the police to the media so that they could get clues from people about the identification of the attackers.

Taken off guard

The jeweller was in his shop at A.S. Rao Nagar when two persons, both in their early thirtees, walked in the guise of customers around 3 p.m.

For nearly 15 minutes, they saw different ornaments and purchased two items worth Rs. 1,800. Suddenly, one of them whipped out a revolver and threatened Agarwal not to raise his voice.

He picked up a pillow lying in a corner of the shop, held it to the abdomen of the jeweller putting the weapon behind it and pulled the trigger.

“The bullet got embedded in the pillow. The assailant used the pillow apparently to muzzle the sound of the gun shot,” the police opine.

The two assailants were well-built and spoke in Hindi with a dash of Telugu.
