RIDING HIGH: P.M. Jose Rijan celebrating his success with his classmates. Nagercoil: P.M.Jose Rijan, son of a fisherman, Pious, has secured the first rank in Class X examinations, results of which were declared on Saturday. Jose, a student of St.Mary Goretty Higher Secondary School at Manalikkarai, scored 496 out of 500 marks with centum in Mathematics, Science and Social Science and 98 marks each in English and Tamil. He has a sister and two elder brothers (twins). “Though I am very poor I could earn laurels for my school only because of the encouragement given by my teachers and parents,” says Jose, who wants to continue in the school and, in future, pursue a course in aeronautical engineering. His mother Marsalin is a ward councillor of Kumarapuram panchayat. His father initially wanted to engage his son in fishing activity, as he was finding it difficult to run the family with the meagre amount earned by him. “On seeing his eagerness for learning, I did not disturb him,” recalls Mr.Pious. His Mathematics teacher, Justin Francis, says Jose is very obedient, self-confident and patriotic. The teachers in the school continue to motivate him to achieve success in the higher secondary examination and are ready to extend all assistance, including financial, to secure his future. The teachers provided special coaching to Jose, which yielded good results. Classmates distributed sweets and burst crackers on the campus to celebrate his achievement.
