dated May 25, 1959: Storm hits Kumbakonam

On May 23, Kumbakonam was in the grip of a sudden whirlwind and heavy rain, accompanied by terrific thunder and lightning, which shook the town intermittently for over half-an-hour. Lightning hit the 147-ft Sarangapaniswamy Temple Rajagopuram, blowing off a huge kalasam and a portion of the Yali on the northern side. The displaced kalasm fell on the tile roofed house adjoining and broke into splinters, puncturing the roof of a room beside which a baby was sleeping in a cradle quietly, blissfully ignorant of the mishap that had threatened to overtake it. Electricity was resumed later.
