New platform launched for short-film producers

CHENNAI: Short films should be made commercially viable and film associations should come forward to support youngsters aspiring to produce short films, according to the speakers at the function organised to mark the inauguration of Short Film Producers Wing of the Film and Television Producers’ Guild of South India on Sunday.

On the commercial aspect of short films, actor Pandiarajan said that his two short films ‘Mahan’ and ‘Iru Thuligal’ had received critical acclamation and gave him profitable financial returns. “It is time for youngsters to create innovative films. The films will also trigger the creativity of feature films makers and enhance the quality of Tamil films as a whole.”

The Film and Television Producers’ Guild of South India president J.V. Rukmangadhan said short films were a platform to bring out the creative ideas in a short time. As the short films must necessarily be less than 70 minutes, content and directional skills play a crucial role in making an impact on the audience’s mind. The Wing will support the short film makers and help them market their films, he said. On copyright and piracy issues, Mr. Rukmangadhan said it was important for the producers to copyright their films to curb piracy and safeguard their films.

Film producer and South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce president K. Ragagopal said young filmmakers must learn about the legal issues associated with film production and copyrights. Feature filmmakers could support upcoming short filmmakers by offering guidance in related aspects. Chennai City Film Exhibitors’ Association president Abirami Ramanathan promised to buy the first 25 short films produced by the members of the newly inaugurated Wing.
