PUDUCHERRY: Government schools in rural areas of Puducherry and Karaikal have reason to be happy. Compared to last year, majority of rural schools have registered a marked improvement in their Class X Board examination results. The reasons attributed to it are focussed approach and increased attention on ensuring better performance. Though government schools in urban and rural parts of Puducherry and Karaikal fared better this year, the spotlight was on rural schools which have improved their performance. Out of 100 government schools that went to Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, 57 improved their results this year, officials of the Directorate of School Education said. Around 54 schools were located in rural areas in the two regions. The average pass percentage of the rural schools in Puducherry was 74.03 and schools in rural Karaikal, 73.13. The results improved this year owing to regular classes during evening hours and weekends, a senior official of the directorate said. “Motivation of teachers was one of the reasons for better performance. Targets were fixed for headmasters to improve their pass percentage depending on their earlier performance. They were told to conduct regular tests,” Director of School Education S. Sundaravadivelu said. The improved results fetched them the government’s prize of Rs. one lakh. As many as 12 schools from Puducherry and Karaikal qualified for the prize for securing above 90 per cent results. Of this, 11 schools were in the rural areas – eight in Puducherry and three in Karaikal. Several rural schools had improved their performance by more than 10 per cent this year. Topping the charts were Vivekananada Government Boys Higher Secondary School at Villianur - which increased its results from 25.37 per cent in 2007-2008 to 61.76 per cent - and Government Higher Secondary School at Korkadu - which secured 68.85 per cent, an increase of 38.49 per cent from last year. He said that overall only two schools had obtained below 40 per cent results. “There will be increased focus on both urban and rural schools. Students mainly failed in subjects such as mathematics and science and the reasons will be identified. Special coaching in these subjects will be given,” he added. However, he said that the scope for improvement for urban schools was less as the basics were already strong, when compared to rural schools. “The earlier pass percentage of rural schools were poor. They have enhanced their results this year,” he noted.
